ระบบซอฟต์แวร์คอมพิวเตอร์ที่ใช้เพื่อจัดระเบียบ และส่งเสริมการทำงานในหมู่คณะ ให้สามารถสร้างเอกสาร หรือเนื้อหาสาระอื่นๆ โดยมากแล้ว ระบบจัดการเนื้อหา มักจะเป็น เว็บแอปพลิเคชัน ซึ่งใช้จัดการเว็บไซต์และเนื้อหาบนเว็บ และมีไม่น้อยที่ระบบจัดการเนื้อหาต้องใช้ซอฟแวร์พิเศษบนเครื่องเครื่องลูกข่าย เพื่อใช้แก้ไขและสร้างบทความต่างๆ
ระบบจัดการเนื้อหา ในตลาดซอฟแวร์คอมพิวเตอร์มีทั้งแบบที่ทำเพื่อการค้าและแบบ โอเพนซอร์ส เนื้อหาที่อยู่บนระบบอาจจะเป็นเนื้อหาที่เป็น ข้อความตัวอักษร ไฟล์รูปภาพ ไฟล์เสียง ไฟล์ภาพเคลื่อนไหว ไฟล์วิดีโอ หรือไฟล์เอกสารอื่นๆ ก็ได้
CMS ย่อมาจาก Content Management System เป็นระบบที่นำมาช่วยในการสร้างและบริหารเว็บไซต์แบบสำเร็จรูป โดยในการใช้งาน CMS นั้นผู้ใช้งานแทบไม่ต้องมีความรู้ในด้านการเขียนโปรแกรม ก็สามารถสร้างเว็บไซต์ได้ ตัวของ CMS เองจะมีโปรแกรมแถมมาและสามารถแทรกเองได้มากมายเช่น Webboard , ระบบจัดการป้ายโฆษณา , ระบบนับจำนวนผู้ชม แม้แต่กระทั่ง ตระกร้าสินค้า และอื่นๆอีกมากมาย

ลำดับการดำเนินงาน
ระบบจัดการเนื้อหามักมีระบบการจัดการลำดับการดำเนินงานของเนื้อหาที่เรียกว่า Workflow ซึ่งลำดับการดำเนินงานนั้นโดยมากจะประกอบไปด้วย

- ขั้นตอนการนำเนื้อหาเข้าระบบ (Ingestion หรือ Creation)
- ขั้นตอนการตรวจสอบเนื้อหา (Staging หรือ Approval)
- ขั้นตอนการนำเนื้อหาไปเผยแพร่ (Delivery หรือ Publishing)

วงจรชีวิตของเนื้อหา
วงจรชีวิตของเนื้อหาภายในระบบจัดการเนื้อหาประกอบด้วย
- การจัดโครงสร้างหรือการจัดหมวดหมู่ (Organization) เป็นการจัดประเภทให้แก่เนื้อหาสาระว่าเป็นประเภทใด ควรมีโครงสร้างแบบใด เป็นการกำหนด Schema ให้แก้เนื้อหาว่าต้องมีองค์ประกอบเช่นใดบ้าง
- ลำดับขั้นดำเนินงาน (Workflow) เป็นกฏเกณฑ์หรือนโยบาย การกำหนดหน้าที่ความรับผิดชอบต่อเนื้อหาสาระ ของเจ้าของหรือผู้เขียน ของผู้เผยแพร่และของผู้ร่วมมือ เป็นลำดับขั้นตอนของการผ่านร่างของเนื้อหา ก่อนที่จะออกเผยแพร่สู่สาธารณะ
- การสร้างสรรค์ (Creation) เป็นการนำเข้าข้อมูล การเขียน จับภาพ อัดเสียง รวบรวม เปลี่ยนแปลง แก้ไข เนื้อหาสาระที่อยู่ภายในระบบ
- การจัดเก็บ (Repository) หมายถึง การจัดเก็บข้อมูลเป็นไฟล์ การจัดเก็บลงฐานข้อมูล การบันทึกลงสื่อ เพื่อให้คงอยู่ไว้ซึ่งข้อมูลภายในระบบ
- การกำหนดเวอร์ชัน (Versioning) เป็นการควบคุมการเปลี่ยนแปลง โดยให้มีหมายเลขการเปลี่ยนแปลง หรือการกำหนดวันที่เปลี่ยนแปลง และจัดเก็บสำรองข้อมูลดังเดิมไว้ เผื่อทำการเรียกคืนข้อมูล หรือแก้ไขกลับ และเพื่อให้รู้ถึงสถานะการเปลี่ยนแปลงของข้อมูล
- การเผยแพร่ (Publishing) เป็นการนำเนื้อหาสาระออกเผยแพร่สู่สาธารณะ ด้วยการจัดส่งไปยังตัวบุคคล การเผยแพร่ในที่สาธารณะ เป็นต้น
- การเก็บเอกสาร (Archives) คือการจัดเก็บเนื้อหาที่ถูกใช้งานแล้ว หรือหมดอายุแล้ว โดยนำมาจัดเก็บเพื่อนำไว้ใช้เป็นฐานความรู้ หรือไว้ใช้เพื่อเตรียมนำเสนอใหม่
